’tis the season to drink before noon

So, we’ve finally reached that point in our marriage where we’ve created enough long distance friends and family we rarely talk to that it justifies sending a dreaded Christmas Letter to them. Now, I’m not a total scrooge with these things, because I genuinely do like hearing about the families of the people I love. But I throw up a little each time I read the phrase “is so gifted” “brand new SUV” or “exotic tropical vacation”.

So I started thinking about this past year and what I should put in our family’s Christmas letter. 2007 was pretty sucky. I really don’t know how to announce my father’s death and still keep some “holiday cheer”. I thought maybe if I wrote something unique, like a poem, that it might work. Unfortunately, in my pregnant glow, I’ve moved from being “hormonally sarcastic” to “complete and total b*#@!” So the only thing I’ve managed so far is:

Maybe if we brag about our family under the guise of holiday cheer,

You’ll leave us alone the rest of the year.

The stanzas don’t really work, but I like it. But from there I have writers block.

What are your feelings on Christmas letters? Do you like them? Hate them? Burn them ritualistically on New Years Eve?

PS-email me your address if you want a card. They’re pretty good this year, I have naughty and nice ones. What you get says something about you. granolagirl94 at gmail dot com.

  1. I used to not like Christmas letters, but then I realized I am so gifted as a writer. I mean how could I not write a letter to all my loved ones telling them about my brand new SUV, the huge promotion I got at work, or about the exotic tropical vacation I took this year. Such exciting events, I want everyone to know and be happy for me!

    ;) j/k

  2. I actually really like Christmas letters. I hardly get any though. Maybe that’s because I never send any.

  3. I’m at a loss about Christmas Letters. I figure most people I’d write read the blog anyway so why waste the paper and time? I’m also in the Bi*&H$ part of pregnancy so maybe writing a letter is a bad idea.

I do like Christmas Cards however. I’ve always liked having them with pictures but this year I’m beginning to doubt that I’m going to let a picture be taken in my fat and glowing state of pregnancy.

  4. I’m pro Christmas letters. Unless they are the boring ones. Or the braggy ones.

  5. I love cards and letters…my granny passed this tradition (?) on to me. I usually send out about 30-50 cards a year. Since it’s just the old man and myself though, I don’t do a letter. My favorites are the silly poems.

  6. p.s. love the new look!

  7. I prefer a short and sweet card greeting myself. My eyes kind of glaze over at Christmas letters… If I really wanted to know whether someone got a brand new SUV or went on an exotic tropical vacation this year, I figure that I would touch base with them otherwise. (Or read their blog. :) )

    Fun new format here!

  8. I like receiving Christmas letters, but I don’t send them out. My favorite one ever was a quiz consisting of 10 multiple choice questions about the family. It was a really cute format and she included one really funny response to each question. Really entertaining.

I don’t know how you’d incorporate a family death into something like that, though. You may just have to send out a “Happy Holidays, this is what each of us have been up to…” letter this year and close out with a paragraph thanking everyone for their love and support after your father’s death.

  9. I like FUNNY Christmas letters. Besically I like letters/cards from people I CARE about, not so much about the ones I don’t. But I suck at sending them out myself. So I feel selfish asking for them.
